Marlon Carey is a multi-talented literary performance artist who has been a staple of the Boston Poetry for over 15 years. He has been a National Poetry Slam semi-finalist, a TEDxBOSTON speaker, a radio host, a car salesman and a high school teacher. Currently, Marlon’s time is taken up with his work as a Teaching Artist with his company Shakespeare to Hip-hop, (a literacy enrichment program that travels to various schools around New England,) writing, recording, performing and spending quality time with his awesome wife and their 3 children…And a cat, named Mojo.
As a teacher, Douglas has worked with students ranging in age from 1 to 90, but now teaches English as a Second Language in an urban middle school. As a poet, he has performed in a wide variety of venues, from Glasgow to Guatemala, but now the most consistent place to find him is in Lowell, MA, at the Untitled Open Mic, where he is the Slam Master for Mill City. He is currently working on the dissertation for a doctorate in education, looking at the development of identity in young writers. Part of that work also involves being the beneficent uncle for Freeverse!, Lowell’s youth poetry group, where he helps to run workshops, organize events, and provide pizza.
Marlon Carey and Douglas Bishop are turning it inside out for this year’s December-baby birthday feature: they will be doing a slam against themselves! Poet against Performer, Performer against Poet! Douglas will be doing Marlon’s poetry, and Marlon will be doing Douglas’s poetry, and the result will be rated by randomly selected judges in a slam format. Will the writer win over the reciter? Will the author win over the actor? You have to come out to find out, but it will be winner take all and all will be the winner.
